Our 70 Years of History About to Come Alive

Business Agent Butch Sidey and Communications Chair David Maidman are pleased to announce that Dr. Chris Madsen has been contracted to write a book about Local 506’s history.  This project was initiated at our June membership meeting and the book will celebrate our 70th year in 2018.

Dr. Chris Madsen is a Professor with the Department of National Defence and is the naval historian at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto where he teaches senior military officers and public servants in the areas of military operations, planning and national security.  He lives with his family in the District of North Vancouver

Dr.  Madsen brings 20 years of research and writing on west coast shipbuilding and naval procurement to the project and held a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to study the wartime relations between government, private industry and organized labour in the region.

Dr.  Madsen helped International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 502 in Surrey write a union history, published last year under the title Longshoring on the Fraser (Granville Island Publishing).

Dr. Madsen looks forward to working with Local 506 as the union starts a relationship with the Department of National Defence in building the new Joint Support Ships at the shipyard in North Vancouver and the jobs and steady employment opportunities afforded members in the coming years.

To help in the production of this book we are asking all members, retirees and former members if they have any information or stories or photos that they might want to share to please contact the union office and let us know so we can include them in the book.
